An Evidence-Based Program To Help Athletes & Sports Teams Reach
Peak Performance

With up to 90% of the game being mental, and no instructions given on how to do this, we understand athletes frustration.

  • Though mental health challenges are not a new experience for student-athletes, it has been pushed to the forefront of priorities by athletes, coaches, parents, athletic departments and others involved with the increasing media reports of tragic outcomes being suffered by seemingly successful student-athletes who can no longer bear the strain of balancing multiple responsibilities and expectations. This along with brave validating public statements from prominent individuals across sports, have led to a growing outcry specifically from the athletes themselves for their teams, clubs and athletic departments to recognize and support their mental health needs.

  • One of the biggest gaps in mental health support for student-athletes is finding people that have lived through the same challenges and therefore can draw on a shared experience. Instead, they encounter clinicians who have not experienced the unique stressors of high-level athletics, or receive thoughts and advice from former athletes who are not qualified in the application of mental health support, knowledge, and practices.

I am a recent alumnus of the NCAA, as a student-athlete who was a 2-year captain on a D3 NESCAC lacrosse team while graduating magna cum laude in neuroscience and theatre, and next transferred to and started on a D1 lacrosse team, during which time I completed my masters in clinical mental health counseling. I have first-hand experience of the daily lives of student athletes, as well as the pressure and stresses. Further, from a sports perspective, I am also a former international level referee, and maintain my NCAA sports connection in my current role on the coaching staff of a D1 lacrosse team, which maintains my first-hand view of the struggles faced by each new generation of athletes.

Professionally, I now work in private practice as a full-time mental health counsellor with a primary focus on Clinical Sports Psychology, which targets student-athletes as a specific population and aims to fill the gap in support for the mental health and well-being of this group at all levels to help them find balance in competitive sports and life as a whole. My work with clients includes a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness to assist in building resilience, and emotional processing to help them in all areas of their lives.

Olivia Downey, Assistant Coach Melrose High School Girls Varsity Soccer Team

“Lantz worked with our team in two workshop sessions, the first a few weeks into our regular season, and the second once we entered the postseason and prepared for the state tournament. During both sessions together, Lantz was able to connect with the team by providing coping methods, mindfulness strategies, and meaningful feedback. He facilitated his workshops through a dynamic, flexible approach, providing a lecture-based section with team participation, partnership/small group opportunities for more individual participation, and guided group therapy through an open circle concept. Our work with Lantz proved to be incredibly impactful and powerful, positively affecting the scope of our season. While all season, the coaching staff noticed how much our team benefited from these workshops, it became more evident that Lantz’s approach made an impact when, during a reflection on our season, nearly every player on the team recognized the importance of mental conditioning and attributed the success of our season to the focus on the mental health aspect of the game.”
